As I read this quote for the first time, I thought to myself, “I always try to do what’s right!” But as I thought about it further, I remembered a question that was posed to my mastermind group about integrity.
The questions was, “How well do I keep my commitments and fulfill my responsibilities?” I took some time to ponder this question and I realized that I have made commitments that I have not kept. How many times have I told someone that I would do something and not follow through? Unfortunately, this happens more than I want to admit.
Just recently, I met a new business owner and we talked about getting together to connect. I told her I would send her my calendar and I had every intention of doing so. That day came and went. I reminded myself several times after the meeting and the days turned into weeks. As each day passes, my reputation and credibility is being affected in a less than positive way. I just sent the darn calendar as a result of writing this blog. I hope I have not destroyed the opportunities.
So what can you do to take advantage of the opportunities and do the right thing?
- If you cannot let your yes be a yes, then just say NO (or something nicer like “I’d really like to, but I can’t right now.”
- If you do make a commitment, do it within 24 hours with no exceptions!
