Do you remember when you were younger hearing, “Sticks and stones will break my bones but names will never hurt me”? I have a vivid recollection of this saying throughout my childhood. I also believed it and created a protective shell around my feelings so that some of the hurtful names could not penetrate.
Today’s more mature thinking conveys a completely different message and it is captured in the meme above, “The one who throws the stone forgets; the one who is hit remembers forever.” As I thought more about this quote, I realized how hurtful things can be and more importantly, how long this hurt lasts.
I am grateful for the updated version about how hurtful words and gestures can affect others. Why not sow kindness into the people that cross your path? The world would be a much better place filled with more peace.
Three Ways to be Kind…
- Show authentic appreciation for another and if you can edify (do it in front of others) it is even more powerful.
- Write a short note or card and drop it in the mail for no other reason but to let that person how much you care.
- Leave a small gift for someone anonymously.
